Sound Reactive Animations
Sound Reactiveness is a pair of open-source audio-visual tools—one coded in Processing, one built in TouchDesigner—that translate live music into generative visuals. Using FFT/beat envelopes, amplitude gates, and parameter panels, both systems drive shapes, particles, and palettes in real time. The Processing build favors lightweight, code-driven patterns; the TouchDesigner patch offers node-based compositing and quick iteration.

Challenge
The hardest work was turning an aesthetic vision into responsive, legible motion. I had to define a visual grammar (forms, palettes, decay) and then engineer it: FFT smoothing to avoid flicker, latency control, normalization across venues, and safe parameter ranges for VJ-style tweaking. Cross-platform parity was tricky—recreating behaviors between code and node graphs—along with performance tuning for projector resolutions and unstable live inputs.
Results
I delivered two reusable tools with preset libraries, on-the-fly controls, and stable performance at student parties and public events. Organizers appreciated the “instant atmosphere” and the ability to match visuals to genre and energy without technical overhead. I documented setup, input calibration, and mapping guidelines, and open-sourced both versions so others could remix them. The systems proved reliable on commodity laptops, external sound cards, and standard projectors.

Conclusion
This project taught me to balance aesthetics, signal processing, and live UX under real-world constraints. I now design reactive systems as modular pipelines: clear inputs, predictable mappings, and guardrails against overload. Next steps include OSC/MIDI/DMX hooks for lighting rigs, auto-calibrating mic input, a preset manager with snapshots, multi-screen output, and lightweight crowd interactivity—so sound-reactive visuals can scale from student parties to professional venues without sacrificing artistic control.
